#2minutebeachclean

Your 2 minutes can help save our beaches

Ask anyone at Bray Leino why they love living in North Devon and one of the first things they’ll mention is the beach. Whether it’s barbecuing sausages with the family as the sun sets or bracing against an autumn storm to watch the rollers break, we’re privileged to have some of the UK’s best beaches on our doorstep.

But there’s a growing problem, and we see it every time we visit. We (human civilisation) release upwards of eight million tonnes of waste plastic into the ocean every year.

No one really knows how long it’ll be around for, but it does all sorts of damage. And beaches everywhere are choking on the stuff.

With the release of the BBC’s Blue Planet II documentary this week, the precarious state of our seas, oceans and coastline is in the spotlight; and the attention can’t come soon enough.

Martin Dorey, former Bray Leino copywriter and author of the successful Campervan Living series, has a brilliantly simple way to highlight the problem and give people a way to make a difference every time they visit the beach.

2MinuteBeachClean

Just two minutes picking up beach litter might sound insignificant, but every piece of plastic collected is one that no longer poses a risk to the local wildlife, or breaks down into thousands of tiny pieces to poison the environment.

People are doing it on beaches everywhere. The #2MinuteBeachClean hashtag has been used over 50,000 times, by people all over the world.

50,000 two-minute beach cleans is over 69 days of solid beach cleaning. Not so insignificant.

Even if you’re nowhere near a beach, you can still make a difference by taking two minutes to work out how you can limit the amount of plastic you use.

We cleaned up Woolacombe beach in North Devon with Martin Dory last week, scroll above to see the film.

We’ll be doing everything we can to help Martin grow 2MinuteBeachClean, while looking at ways to reduce the amount of plastic we use in our business.
